Follow your guide across Kesugi Ridge in Denali State Park, where endless ridges unfurl beneath wide open skies. On sunny days, see unobstructed views of Mount Denali dominating the horizon. Traverse windswept tundra, hike through fragrant spruce forests, ford creeks, swim in alpine lakes, and cross open grasslands where brown bears roam.
Camp high on the ridge each night and experience Alaska’s midnight sun. On clear days, the panorama stretches for miles. With Mount Denali gleaming in the distance, these are the most breathtaking views in the state!
This is untamed Alaska: raw, expansive, and utterly unforgettable.
ADVENTURE ITINERARY
DAY ONE
Shuttle to the trailhead. Ascend the ridge.
Meet your guide and new hiking friends in Anchorage early in the morning. We’ll make sure your pack is dialed in and hand out bear canisters and group gear. Then, you’ll hop in a shuttle for a scenic ride to Denali State Park.
Begin hiking through a vibrant birch forest. Soon, the trail climbs out of the trees and the tundra opens around you. Far-flung views unfold, and each step of the challenging ascent reveals more of the landscape. On a clear day, you can even spot Mount Denali, the tallest mountain in North America!
On the crest of the ridge, the trail meanders through a wide open tundra, colorful, soft, and springy underfoot. The cool air smells like earth, moss, and crushed berries, which you can scoop up as you walk.
In the evening, your guide helps you set up camp beside an alpine lake. As your guide cooks dinner, it’s impossible not to stare at Mount Denali dominating the skyline across from you. Its massive glaciers catch the light, its dark chutes carve down the peak, all surrounded by a maze of jagged mountains.
As alpenglow paints the peaks pink and orange, you yawn and realize the sun is still lingering late into the evening… Welcome to Alaska!

DAY TWO
Traverse the ridge
Wake up high in the mountains with the wide open ridge all around you. The smell of coffee drifts toward your tent as your guide cooks breakfast.
As you hike, everywhere you look is untouched wilderness. To your left, layers of mountains unfold deeper into Denali State Park. If it’s a clear day, Mount Denali towers above the landscape to your right. In the sunshine, the tundra is patchwork of greens and whites, dotted with yellow and purple wildflowers. You’ll pass countless small lakes, each one tempting you to dip your feet in the cool water.
On a misty day, the world turns mysterious as fog drifts across the trail, opening vistas only for moments at a time, and hiding what you’ll discover next. Giant boulders loom through the mist, appearing like ancient ruins. In the fall, the tundra is orange, brown, deep purple, and covered in berries. The whole landscape feels enchanted, otherworldly, and totally Alaskan!
After setting up camp beside a lake at Ermine Hill, your guide cooks dinner. On a sunny evening, you might jump into the lake for a refreshing swim. On a misty one, you may wander up the hill to visit a strange rock formation that feels like a mini Stonehenge. As you explore, you might even spot an ermine darting between the rocks, its sleek white fur flashing as it runs.

DAY THREE
Hike through an enchanted forest
Today begins with a steep and slippery descent into a wet spruce forest. The path narrows as the trees grow dense, and you step over logs and branches, careful to avoid the spiky devil’s club plant. You splash through muddy streams, embracing the fact that wet boots are impossible to avoid in Alaska!
In the thick trees, your view extends only to the next bend in the trail, and you imagine brown bears hiding somewhere nearby. Your guide has already prepared the group, teaching you how to handle a bear encounter and providing you with bear spray. You make plenty of noise as you wander through the woodland, embracing the wildness of the adventure. This is Alaska, after all!
Deep in the forest, you reach Skinny Lake, the largest lake of the trip. We stop here for lunch, and if the weather is nice, the dark blue water tempts you into a refreshing dip! After sloshing through a low lying grassland, the trail climbs up onto the wide open ridge once again.
Back on top of Kesugi Ridge, this portion of the trail is sprinkled with lakes. Each hill creates its own little pocket with a pond surrounded by boulders and tundra. Any one of these nooks would make a magical campsite! Just before fatigue sets in, your guide selects the perfect pond for the evening and you settle in for a warm dinner.

DAY FOUR
Descend from Kesugi Ridge
You wake up ready for one last day of adventure… and to get back to civilization in Anchorage!
The morning winds through grassy hills dotted with beautiful lakes. The trail undulates over small rises, offering another chance to spot Mount Denali in the distance. Midway through the morning, we reach Mini Skinny Lake, the “younger sister” of Skinny Lake! Here, we pause for lunch and peer out at the endless views one last time.
Our descent begins, winding down switchbacks into a lush green forest. Cascade Creek crosses the trail, and we ford across to the other side! The trees grow taller as we move downward, signaling that we must be close to the bottom now. When the first sight of the majestic Byers Lake appears, you know the adventure is coming to a close.
At the lake, we hop into the shuttle for the journey back to Anchorage. As the miles roll by, you reflect on your incredible journey. Before you know it, you’re back in Anchorage, now with new friends, already planning your next adventure together!
